Since the late 1980s, Chinese directors such as Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige have reaped many awards around the world and made their names known to a global audience. This generation, the so-called Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, is gradually ceding its place to a new generation of younger directors.
